As the Mazda lineup moves forward, more and more vehicles are adopting the KODO - Soul of Motion design language. The word KODO translates to “soul of motion” in Japanese and the design language aims to give the illusion of movement, such as an animal pouncing on its prey. The 2016 CX-3 shows clear elements of this design language, creating a visually appealing vehicle that seamlessly connects to other Mazda models through a shared design language.

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 and KODO Design History

The public first got to see the KODO design in action at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. At that point, Mazda debuted the design language on the Shinari concept, which is a premium sports coupe with four doors. Right from the start, the design featured an aerodynamic form, smooth lines, and dynamic elements that conveyed the sense of motion even when the Shinari concept was simply on display at the auto show.

The CX-3’s larger cousin, the CX-5, was the first Mazda model to enter production with the KODO design for its 2010 model year. After its grand entrance, the design language started spreading across the lineup.

KODO Design Elements in the 2016 Mazda CX-3

When you look at the 2016 Mazda CX-3 or another model with the KODO design language, you will notice that it appears to move simply when standing still. That is the result of the Mazda design team succeeding in their goal: capturing the moment that energy becomes motion. They used predators hunting as their inspiration, focusing on the exact moment they pounce on their prey. At the same time, the designers incorporated features of traditional Japanese art and craftsmanship, such as a focus on simplicity. The Mazda CX-3 design aims to be alluring with a sense of speed and tenseness as well, as these are the three main points of the KODO design language.

On the 2016 Mazda CX-3, the KODO design and illusion of movement becomes clear with the pronounced grille and signature wing in front. Together, these elements create a flow that travels to the crossover’s body, creating the illusion of being formed from just one piece of metal. The contours suggest energy while the overall design is simple, following Japanese traditions. Other KODO design elements in the CX-3 include bold wheel arches, flowing contours, and sleek lines. The crossover exudes a powerful stance with the 18-inch wheels found on the top trim.

The CX-3 As Art

To some people, the 2016 Mazda CX-3’s exterior design can even be akin to a work of art. In fact, Mazda realized that the KODO design language could extend to more than just their vehicles. That is why you can find other items that combine the Mazda design with other elements, such as European craftsmanship. This includes the Sofa by KODO, the Table by KODO, and the Bike by KODO.

Other CX-3 Exterior Elements of Note

In addition to the stylish exterior courtesy of KODO design, the Mazda CX-3 also has all the exterior amenities most drivers want from a modern vehicle. These include things such as a rear spoiler, halogen or LED headlights, LED taillights, and LED fog lights.
