Although the Mazda CX-3 only has one transmission available, there are a few variations of it to choose from. Best of all, because it is a SkyActiv transmission, it gets excellent fuel economy and gives the CX-3 great handling.

The Mazda CX-3 Transmission Variations

The standard transmission in the CX-3 is a SkyActiv-Drive 6-speed automatic that features SPORT mode as well as a Drive Selection switch. This is the stand transmission choice for the GX and GS trims. The GT trim comes standard with a very similar transmission, but that also features paddle shifters to give you more control.

Mazda CX-3 Transmission with SkyActiv

Because it is a piece of SkyActiv technology, the Mazda CX-3 transmission is designed to give you perfect control of your SUV. Before creating their SkyActiv transmissions, Mazda conducted research and discovered that drivers agree that an ideal transmission will put them in perfect control of their vehicle. They then used this information to create a transmission that achieves that goal, giving you precise handling in addition to amazing efficiency.

The SkyActiv-Drive automatic transmission in the CX-3 is able to deliver the direct feel you would typically only find with a manual transmission. This is mostly thanks to its expanded lockup range that is over 80 percent. In addition to this “direct feel”, the SkyActiv-Drive automatic is able to give you great fuel economy, particularly at low speeds, and earn the reputation of being smooth. Instead of sticking to an existing transmission with various strengths and weaknesses, engineers worked to find a Mazda CX-3 transmission that excels in every way possible, balancing smoothness, fuel economy, and the direct feel.

Numbers Associated with the Transmission

Since there is one main transmission choice in the 2016 Mazda CX-3, fuel economy depends mostly on the drivetrain that you select. Unless you choose the GT trim, you have the option of front-wheel drive or i-ACTIV all-wheel drive while the GT only offers the AWD. In any CX-3 with front-wheel drive, the SkyActiv-Drive transmission delivers a fuel economy of 8.2 L/100km in the city and 6.7 L/100km on the highway. Models with all-wheel drive can take advantage of the transmission’s ability to get 8.8 L/100km in the city and 7.3 L/100km on the highway.

Other Related Components

The transmission works with the CX-3’s 146 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque. The engine that it works with is a SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter DOHC 4-cylinder with 16 valves and a compression ratio of 13.0:1. Since both the Mazda CX-3 transmission and engine feature SkyActiv technology, it is no surprise that they are able to deliver such excellent numbers for fuel economy. Other mechanical elements of the CX-3 include a rear torsion beam suspension, front independent MacPherson strut suspension along with coil springs, front stabilizer bars, and a rack-and-pinion column for electrically assisted power steering. The mechanical system also includes safety-related elements such as Dynamic Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill Launch Assist, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, and an Anti-lock Brake System.
