Mazda’s SkyActiv technology is their unique collection of innovations that bring more life, efficiency, and performance to their vehicles, including the CX-3. There is a range of components to SkyActiv technology, including engines, transmissions, and structural components. In all cases, the technology works to take crossovers like the CX-3 to the next level.

SkyActiv Engines in the 2016 Mazda CX-3

The engine in the Mazda CX-3 is a SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC 4-cylinder engine. It is one of the many SkyActiv engines in the Mazda lineup that features an impressive compression ratio. The maximum found in SkyActiv engines is a ratio of 14:1 and the one in the CX-3 comes very close at 13:1. The high compression ratios associated with SkyActiv-G engines are not found among any other mass-produced gas engines, showing that Mazda truly strives to combine the best of both driving comfort and fuel efficiency. When you compare the SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter engine in the CX-3 with those in similar engines on the market, you will notice that both torque performance and fuel efficiency are boosted by about 15 percent. Because the biggest boost to torque occurs at low to medium speeds, the new SkyActiv-G engines with high-efficiency and direct injection are better able to meet driver’s real-world needs.

SkyActiv Transmissions in the 2016 Mazda CX-3

There are two main types of SkyActiv transmissions within the Mazda lineup and the automatic is available on the CX-3. Mazda understands that when people are looking for their “ideal transmission”, they want one that lets them be in perfect control of their vehicle. As such, each of the SkyActiv transmissions improves fuel economy while providing precise handling.

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 comes with a SkyActiv-Drive 6-speed automatic that has SPORT mode and a Drive Selection switch. It can be upgraded to a version that also has paddle shifters. This standard SkyActiv-Drive automatic provides you with the benefits of an automatic while still maintaining the direct feel and control associated with manuals. In addition to the direct feel, the automatic also gives you fuel economy while moving at low speeds and a smooth transmission. Instead of creating a transmission with weaknesses and strengths such as those from other automakers, Mazda created an “ideal automatic” that provides the results drivers want in every way. The direct feel that helps it stand out from the crowd comes from the over 80 percent lockup range.

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 also has a lean body that is still sturdy. The SkyActiv-Body lost 8 percent of its weight to be lean enough to accelerate, stop, and turn. At the same time, Mazda completely made over the framework, improving the rigidity by 30 percent for safety. This helps disperse impact shocks, earning the CX-3 great safety ratings.

As with the SkyActiv-Body, the SkyActiv-Chassis in the 2016 Mazda CX-3 is lightweight, yet rigid. The suspensions in both the front and rear of the vehicle have been redesigned completely and the chassis has new features, including its highly rigid and lightweight cross member and the electric power steering system that makes swift handling easier.
